Brief History
The Building Contractors Association of Cyprus was established in 1939 and officially entered in the Register as the first registered Employer's Guild in 1943.
During the period 1940-1941, the Building Contractors Association of Cyprus was in labor unrest with the trade unions, especially during the great strike of 1948, which lasted from September until December 1948.
Under these circumstances, the contractors realized the need for an orderly and planned way to deal with situations and disputes with trade unions and elected Mr. George Paraskevaides as Secretary General of the League, to whom they essentially entrusted their fate.
Mr. George Paraskevaides, a gentle man, wise, pacifistic, but brave and determined immediately after his election as President of the Federation, persuaded the members to follow the policy triangle below:
- Clustering of Members in unity and solidarity
- Display of a strong response against unlawfulness
- Pursuit of genuine reconciliation with the Trade Unions
Through these he succeeded in laying the foundations for a genuine, lasting and fruitful cooperation between the Federation and Trade Unions, which is to date an example. A key pillar of their cooperation was the signing of a collective bargaining agreement with provisions for maintenance of labor peace, renunciation of violence as a means of resolving labor disputes, compliance with proper procedures for working behavior and cooperation to promote common goals and objectives.
Achievements of the Association include:
- The drafting of the first Contracting Contract between Contractors and Engineers / Architects in 1948
- The Formula for Labor Price movements
- The establishment of the Builders Provident Fund
- Primary role in establishing the Federation of Employers and Industrialists
The increase in validity and reliability of the Cypriot contractor, was stamped with a further offer to the contracting world: the premises, in which the Building Contractors Association of Cyprus has been housed since 1979, an offer by George Paraskevaides and his company.
Mr. George Violaris and Angelos Constantinou served with zeal and success in both managerial and various other positions for 58 and 46 years respectively alongside the late former President Demetris Sampson.
